LONDON, 18 MAY 2018: The 2018 FE Alpha Manager of the Year awards were presented last night at the Museum of London, as over 250 members of the industry came together to celebrate the top talent in asset management.

Fourteen awards were presented on the night, with the top accolade of FE Alpha Manager of the Year going to Luke Kerr of Old Mutual Global Investors. Kerr is in charge of the Old Mutual UK Dynamic Equity fund and has recorded a 396% return over the course of his tenure, according to FE Analytics data.

Kristian Heugh of Morgan Stanley was a double award winner, taking the titles of Best New FE Alpha Manager and Best Alpha Manager in Bull Market. Heugh has managed the Morgan Stanley Global Opportunity fund since 2010 and co-managed the Morgan Stanley Asia Opportunity fund since 2016. He has returned 215% over eight years.

Hermes’ Gary Greenberg is a winner for the second consecutive year in the Best Regional Equity Specialist (Emerging Markets) Alpha Manager category. Steven Andrew of M&G has achieved the same feat, taking home the Best Multi Asset Alpha Manager award two years in a row.

Neil Bradford, CEO at FE says: “The FE Alpha Manager awards are a celebration of the industry’s best-rated fund managers. They are recognition of a manager’s ability to create risk-adjusted alpha, outperformance in both rising and falling markets and of those who consistently beat their sector peers.”

Charles Younes, research manager at FE, comments: “This year’s award winners have combined consistent performance throughout their career with phenomenal outperformance over the past year in their respective categories.  This is an incredible achievement in the face of unpredictable markets, rising yields and enhanced competition from active but also passive investors.

“The winners are determined by narrowing down the FE Alpha-rated managers to a list of the highest-scoring managers. Once we had a refined list, we used qualitative analysis to select the brightest stars.”
